Both UMF and MGO are valid measures of non-peroxide activity of manuka honey. UMF measures the activity itself, whereas MGO measures the major compound producing that activity.

MGO Manuka honey is tested for Methylglyoxal which is an organic substance found in Manuka honey that contributes to the antibacterial property of Manuka honey. It does not have the regulatory network established by Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association (UMFHA).
